Increasing Access to Primary Care for MA Members

Access to care is vital to healthy living and critically important to address health disparities and improve health outcomes. We are excited to share findings from a new study with Harvard University in which patients of senior-focused primary care (SFPC) clinics had 17% more visits with their primary care doctor than patients of other primary care organizations. The impact of SFPC was more significant for Black and low-income patients who received 39% and 21% more primary care visits.

Learn more as Dr. Kate Goodrich, Humana’s Chief Medical Officer, discusses the significance of the study and what it means for the patients we serve, the providers we support and the healthcare system overall at https://huma.na/4f1TOl8.

VBC Study

Helping to improve health equity for everyone is a key part of what drives us. That includes looking at how improving business models may affect patients.

A new study by Humana Healthcare Research showed that value-based payment models—where the cost of care is based on things like health outcomes and patient satisfaction—were associated with less race disparity in emergency department visits for Black patients who received primary care from a value-based doctor. While more research is needed to determine exactly how this type of care contributes to the differences, the findings may suggest a path to more equitable care for everyone.

Following medication schedules as prescribed can have an impact on more than just health—it can affect healthcare use and costs, too.

A recent Humana Healthcare Research study found that inconsistencies in medication adherence were associated with increased likelihood of healthcare resource utilization, such as emergency room visits and inpatient stays, and increased costs for patients taking medications to treat diabetes, hypertension and hyperlipidemia.
